Republican Party At Risk

The Republican Party is at risk of impoding if party leaders are not careful in dealing with tax increases, balancing the budget, immigration reform and various social issues.   Agreeing to tax increases in the Fiscal Cliff Deal is not sitting well with economic Conservatives like this Blogger.  The Ryan Budget is a step in the right direction; but any compromise with Socialists that raises taxes further, or continues the deficit spending that is adding to our National Debt would be the kiss of death for the Republican Party.

We do need comprehensive Immigration Reform; but blanket amnesty of any kind will turn off millions of Republican Voters.   While abortion in cases of rape, incest, or if a mother's life is really in danger may be tolerable, though not wonderful, any laws that make access to abortion easier would be a deal killer.   Finally, the Gay Marriage issue for many Social Conservatives is a line in the sand.   This Blogger can live with Civil Unions; but the use of the word "marriage" related to Gay Unions does not work for me.

Republicans are walking a very fine line.   Naturally, the Republican Party needs to broaden its appeal with nuanced positions on all of these issues; but becoming the Socialist Party Light, will destroy the Republican Party, which of course is Obama's intent.  Republicans do need to attract Latinos and Blue Dog Reagan Democrats and Independents to win elections.   That does not mean adopting Socialist ideology.   Without the base of the Republican Party, comprised of both Social and Economic Conservatives, the Republican Party will go the way of the Whigs and be no more.
