In the next five weeks, the people of New Jersey and Virginia will go to the polls to elect their next governor. Both of these races are classic contests. The Democrats, Jon Corzine, the incumbent in New Jersey and Creigh Deeds in Virginia are tax and spend left wing liberals that favor big government and all of President Obama's Socialist schemes. The Republicans, Chris Christie of New Jersey and Bob McDonnell of Virginia are conservative Republicans that support limited government, Capitalism free market solutions to the recession and family values. As of now both Christie and McDonnell are ahead in the polls by 7% or more. This is particularly important in New Jersey which is a very blue state that voted heavily for Obama. Virginia, which Obama also carried, is a more purple state.
The Governor's election in New Jersey and Virginia is the first referendum on President Obama because though he is not on the ballot, his Socialist schemes are very much the issue being debated by the candidates. If Christie and McDonnell win, which may happen, it will send shudders through the halls of Washington among the Democrat Socialists that control Congress. It will say to them that the nation does not support all of Obama's Socialist schemes. That is the reason big labor unions and various left wing organizations in the country are throwing big money into these races. All understand what is at stake.
