Uruguay - Another Socialist Economic Basket Case

As this Blogger journeys through South America, I have come to Uruguay, another Socialist economic basket case.  Uruguay is a small nation, with about 3.5 million people, primarily of European decent, that used to be a fairly wealthy country.   That was before years of Fascist Dictators and the current President, Jose Mujica, a former Communist, who now claims he is a governing Socialist.   Since being elected and taking office in 2010, Mujica has moved to redistribute income in the name of social justice.   To do so, Mujica has raised all sorts of taxes on the rich and the middle class to provide welfare and food stamps to the poor.   Sound familiar.

As a result, Uruguay is a drab nation with no future.   Health care and university education are "free", sort of.   Middle Class and rich people, with money, do not use the public hospitals because they are so bad.  Instead, they subscribe to private hospitals by paying a monthly premium and fee for service health care.   University education is free, except that the middle class and rich, must pay the state back over 25 years for the education they receive for "free".

That money is put into a "Solidarity Fund" to pay the poor to go to university, rather than work during those years.  This Blogger worked all the way through university.   Go figure.  All high school graduates can attend the one and only university in Uruguay.  There are no qualification requirements in this totally egalitarian society.

The effect of Uruguay's Socialist Schemes is that the country's population is shrinking.   Young people in the Middle Class and the rich are leaving Uruguay, so much so, that the government is attempting to encourage immigration because the population continues to age as young people leave for greener pastures.   There are a few wealthy areas of Montevideo, Uruguay's capital of 1.5 million people; but none of the homes would compare with other Western countries, including the wealthy areas of nearby Brazil or Argentina.

People in Uruguay earn very little money.   By comparison, a young doctor at a public hospital is paid just $1,000 a month.   Further, the Uruguayan currency has been devalued, over the years, from one peso to the dollar to 20 pesos to the dollar.  This is causing capital flight.  The same thing happened in Argentina, however, they went from 1 peso to the dollar to a little more than 4 pesos to the dollar.  Socialism is destroying the economy in Uruguay.   And, it will only get worse as young, talented people depart the country leaving behind the old and the poor that require welfare support.   Then what income will there be to redistribute.

The fact is that Socialism, where ever it has been tried in the world, has led to poverty, misery and a loss of freedom.  Uruguay is just one more example of Socialist failure.   Yet, Socialist President Obama wants to "transform" the US into a European style Socialist nation.   Obama is preaching Class Warfare to win reelection, the same as President Mujica of Uruguay.   Various European countries face bankruptcy because of unsustainable cradle to grave entitlements.   The US is on the same road as ObamaCare, a new entitlement, will contribute to the bankruptcy of our country.  Countries like Uruguay are on a road to poverty because Socialism in that country is causing an Exodus of talented people and capital to occur.

Anyone in the US that believes Socialism is the right path for the United States needs to come to Uruguay to see the end of this story.   Obama will add more than $5 Trillion to the National Debt during his four years in office; more than any other President in American history.   The US credit rating has been downgraded on Obama's watch, which has never happened before in our history.  When Obama was running for the Presidency in 2008, he said adding to the National Debt was reckless and unpatriotic.   Oh really!!   The federal government just announced another Trillion dollar plus deficit in 2012 with no end in sight.   President Obama, in pursuing his Socialist Schemes, is bankrupting our country.

We The People must stand up and say NO MORE.   But, this deficit spending will not stop unless we sweep Socialists, at all levels of government, including President Obama, out of office in 2012 and 2014.   We have to send these Socialist characters packing to save our nation from bankruptcy.   We can do it.   We must do it to preserve our freedom, our nation and way of life for the sake of our children and grandchildren.

We must make Obama a one term President to restore economic growth and job creation again in America.  If Obama is reelected, we will continue on a path of decline for our country and eventually we will lose our national sovereignty.   We can't let that happen.   We can't allow Obama to turn the United States into another Uruguay.

  1. How do you expect the "poor" to work and pay back horrendously high university costs without lots of high paying jobs? You selfish right wing capitalists don't even understand Bernie Sander's appeal to the millions of American college students drowning in private loan debt!
