Importance Of The Second Amendment

It is no coincidence that our Founding Fathers listed the right to bear arms as the Second Amendment in the Bill of Rights of the US Constitution, positioning this right in importance just after the First Amendment that guarantees freedom of speech, religion and assembly.   Our Founding Fathers were educated and learned the lessons of history well.   As such, they knew that for more than 5,000 years of organized government, in one form or another, the state has been used for good and for evil.

Those patriots that formulated our Constitution had recently fought the Revolutionary War to rid themselves and our country of a dictatorial King, who ruled by Divine Right, not the will of the people.  Our Founding Fathers knew very well that without guns in the hands of the citizenry, it would have been impossible to prevail against the British, which at the time was the most powerful nation in the world.

Thomas Jefferson, who wrote the Declaration of Independence and eventually became our third President conceded that no matter their good intentions, it might be that one day the government of the United States, left to the designs of men, could become tyrannical and an enemy of the people requiring another revolution.   For that reason, Jefferson supported the Second Amendment, the right to bear arms as a last resort in the event democracy as originally designed, failed to guarantee the freedom that was intended by our Founding Fathers.  To be clear, our Founding Fathers wrote and ratified the Constitution to limit the power of government, not to expand it.

Unfortunately, during 100 years of Socialist Creep, we have seen our freedoms eroded so much so that today, the federal government intrudes into all aspects of daily life as was never intended by our Founding Fathers.  In addition, unless we get deficit spending under control and soon and pay off our $16 Trillion National Debt,  it is very likely that the United States will face the equivalent of bankruptcy and the financial chaos and calamity that will follow, as is happening in Greece and other countries.   If this occurs, we will see civil strife on our streets.  Our government could collapse, or be forced to take on dictatorial powers.  If these things come to pass, which will surely happen if we don't get our financial house in order, ordinary citizens may need to protect themselves, both from mobs in the streets and our government.   All of this may sound ridiculous; but similar scenarios have occurred in other countries throughout history.

Further let us not forget that government was used to enforce and support slavery and discrimination in the United States for more than 200 years.   In addition,  Socialist President Franklin Roosevelt used the power of government to round up Japanese Americans during World War II and put them in prison camps causing them to lose everything they owned.  And, the EPA Gestapo regularly tramples on property rights.  Eminent domain is often used by government to confiscate real property from Americans not for public use, as was originally intended; but for private use taking land from one person to give it to another person for personal gain.   Finally, the Supreme Court recently ruled in the ObamaCare Case that government can use its taxing authority to compel any behavior.   So government in America if often a threat to our freedom and unfortunately must be feared.

No doubt, as we face another tragic mass killing in Colorado by a madman, there will be calls to limit, or even eliminate the Second Amendment of the US Constitution, by Socialists and other left wing radicals in our country.    This is nothing new.  And, while there should be legal mechanisms in place to prevent convicted criminals and those with mental impairment from buying guns,  this tragic incident should not be used as an excuse to limit law abiding citizens from buying guns.  Obviously, millions of Americans own guns for their personal protection, or hunting and have never murdered anyone.   The fact that every once in a while some lunatic uses guns to kill is no excuse to limit Second Amendment Rights.

The reality is that any determined lunatic, or Terrorist that chooses to commit mass murder can build bombs, or use gases, or poisons, or airplanes as bombs to kill far more people than is possible using a gun.   Banning guns, or making it impossible for law abiding citizens to buy guns will not prevent the occasional lunatic, or Terrorist from committing a heinous crime.  Unfortunately, it is what it is.  To do that, we must do a better job identifying these deranged people before they commit the crime.   And, Hollywood needs to stop glorifying violence and murder in the movies and TV, which desensitizes unstable individuals to commit acts of murder.

This issue is about protecting freedom.  All should remember that one of the first things the NAZI's and Communists did when taking power in Germany, the Soviet Union, Cuba and China was to ban guns.   These totalitarian regimes committed mass murder in the name of their crazy ideologies.  If the citizenry was armed, it would have been far more difficult for the dictators that ran these countries to commit their heinous crimes.  World history may have been altered dramatically and perhaps the deaths of millions of people could have been averted if the citizenry had guns.

Our Founding Fathers got it right when the added the Second Amendment, the right to bear arms to the Bill of Rights of the United States Constitution.  Ultimately, when all else fails, the people must have a means of defending themselves from politicians, running a government, that would commit murder to stay in power, or in the event of civil strife.  Socialists, throughout history, including those in our government today want to take away the right of the people to own guns.   We can't allow that to happen because it is a road to tyranny and a loss of our freedom.

We must take back our country in 2012 and 2014 to protect our Second Amendment Rights among many other reasons.  To do so, we must sweep Socialists, at all levels of government, including President Obama, out of office in 2012 and 2014.   We must elect Conservatives that support the Constitution, as it was designed by our Founding Fathers, including the Second Amendment, the right to bear arms.  We can do it.  We must do it to preserve our freedom, our nation and way of life for the sake of our children and grandchildren.   In the mean time, when you hear Socialists and the lame stream, left wing media calling for elimination of the Second Amendment and or banning gun sales to law abiding citizens, beware their words.  Socialists throughout history have been both a threat and an enemy to freedom.
